Mestreech & Lîdje. The Light of Maastricht and Liège painted by Nop Briex.

Mestreech & Lîdje. The Light of Maastricht and Liège painted.

When I visit Maastricht in the Netherlands or Liège in Belgium, I'm always excited like a little child. Located along the river Maas, surrounded by mining spoil tips and sloping Ardennes foothills they are exciting with their vibrant urban life, each with its own home-brewed infrastructure and local language. The day and night light, reflected by the hills and river, affects the mood of their residents and lightens up the cities in an almost apocalyptic atmosphere. Whether the weather is sunny, rainy or it’s a overcast day, the cities always resonate differently with their specific characteristic sounds, scents and colours.

On my journeys to Maastricht, Liège and the surrounding green patched areas of Eijsden and Visé, I painted on location (en plein air) as well as in my home studio after a day of photographing with the memory’s afterglow. I’m convinced that this great hard cover book with 112 semi-gloss thick pages filled with great paintings from my hand invites you to see those great cosy places where I have been painting.

Briex copying a Vincent van Gogh portrait painting by John Peter Russell

After years of scientific and historic research the portrait painting of Vincent van Gogh, oil painted in 1886 by John Peter Russell is finally repainted by Nop Briex in acrylic with Van Gogh's exact head shape and right look.
The grand showdown took place a little while ago...
