Château Neercanne is a very nice castle near Neercanne just outside Maastricht (NL) in the Jeker wine valley and originates from 1353. Nowadays it's in use as a hotel, part of the Oostwegel Group. This painting in impressionistic style is made upon a screen drop from Google Streetview.

Château Neercanne is een heel mooi kasteel nabij Neercanne net buiten Maastricht in het wijndal van de Jeker en dateert van 1353. Tegenwoordig is het in gebruik als hotel, onderdeel van de Oostwegelgroep. Dit impressionistisch schilderij is gemaakt naar een Google Streetview screendrop.

Sad event near Isola del Giglio

And then it happened on Friday the 13th, January 2012. The Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia sailed too close to the shore of Isola del Giglio and hit a rock in shallow water. The with passengers, crew, food and diesel oil fully loaded 240.000.000 worth boat, who just started its voyage over the Mediterranean Sea, tragically capseized. The Costa Concordia chimney has a similar paint scheme like the chimneys of the famous Titanic...

En dan gebeurde het op vrijdag de 13e, januari 2012. Het Italiaanse cruiseschip Costa Concordia voer te dicht bij de kust van Isola del Giglio and botste op een rots. Het met passagiers, bemanning, voedsel en stookolie volgeladen 240.000.000 kostende schip, dat net zijn reis over de Middellandse Zee was begonnen, kapseisde jammerlijk. De Costa Concordia schoorsteen heeft eenzelfde kleurenschema zoals de schoorstenen van de Titanic...

The criminal and armour freak Nordine Amrani who killed and wounded innocent Liegeois with a rifle, revolver and hand granades at December 13, 2011 in front of the Court of Justice resided at the Residence Belvedere, Rue de Campine, 4000 Liege (Google Street View link: http://g.co/maps/gveuq). Prior to the event Amrani killed the neighbour's cleaning lady and hided the death body in his store hangar.

About a week before this crime took place, I coincidentaly made a Google Street View painting of the Liegeois court building.

De crimineel en wapenfreak Nordine Amrani die op 13 December 2011 onschuldige Luikenaren met een geweer, revolver en handgranaten om het leven bracht en verwondde voor het Gerechtsgebouw woonde in Residence Belvedere, Rue de Campine, 4000 Luik (Google Street View link: http://g.co/maps/gveuq). Vooraf aan zijn daad vermoorde Amrani de kuismadam van de buren en verstopte het lijk in zijn opslagloods.

Ongeveer een week voor deze wanhoopsdaad maakte ik toevalligerwijs een Google Street View schilderij van het Luikse gerechtsgebouw.

I headed again to Maastricht, my most beloved city. I took many pictures and painted en plein air in the warm sunny Autumn weather with the river Meuse at an historical low level.

Ik ging weer eens naar Maastricht, mijn meest geliefde stad. Ik nam er veel foto's en schilderde in de openlucht in het warme zonnige herfstweer met de rivier de Maas op een historisch laag peil.

The best ingredients for clean plein air painting: a digital camera, my MacBook Pro and drawing tablet. No battle with real brushes, oil paint, thinners etc. but digitally oil painting, digitally though hand painted stroke by stroke. Here the several stages of making an oil painting with ArtRage, depicting the Wilhelmina Bridge in Maastricht (NL).

De beste ingrediënten voor schoon openluchtschilderen: een digitale camera, mijn MacBook Pro en een tekentablet. Geen gevecht met echte penselen, olieverf, verdunners enz. maar digitale olieverf, digitaal maar handgeschilderd, streek voor streek. Hier ziet u de verschillende stadia van het maken van een olieverf met ArtRage, voorstellende de Wilhelminabrug in Maastricht (NL).

Since a week Belgium is added to the world of Google Street View. Belgium is a beautiful country and has, like every other country, next to very nice rural areas also depressive suburban city scenes. This week I visited the Belgian Ardennes and the Liege city district.

Sinds een week is België toegevoegd aan de wereld van Google Street View. België is een heel mooi land en heeft, zoals ieder ander land, naast zijn prachtige omgevingen ook decors van triest ogende voorsteden. Deze week bezocht ik de Belgische Ardennen en de omgeving van Luik.

To one of Tilburg's oldest barber shops

Somebody in the city told me last week that one of Tilburg's oldest barber shops will close its doors for ever by December 31, 2011 because the present owner and sole barber Jan Cuypers is going to retire. His son shall not follow him up because he has other career plans. The shop was originally established in 1881 by the family Lejeune (The Young) and in those days they might have cut the King's hair when he was in town.

So yesterday I headed with my withdrawing hair frontier, Converse Allstars sneakers, checkered shirt, Soho bag and PME Jeans for the very first time to this barber to enjoy a true classic hair cut experience and photo shoot. Really everything is vintage in this shop: no fake but real vintage... maybe my grand father went here as well.

With me I had my digital camera and tripod. I installed my photo device on the tripod and place it all on a strategic spot back in the shop. I told the barber that I do not use flash so that we have to keep very still from the moment de camera takes the shot. I pressed the camera button to activate the 10 seconds count down. I ran and jumped into the barber chair and asked the barber to get into the perfect position while I put my face into "en profile" position to emphasize the presence of a mirror. Click...the picture was taken and I told the barber that I'm going to make a painting of it and that I will show it to him by the end of December for another fine and clean haircut result.

Afgelopen week vertelde mij iemand in de stad dat een van Tilburgs oudste herenkappers per 31 December 2011 definitief zal sluiten omdat de huidige eigenaar en enige kapper Jan Cuypers met pensioen zal gaan. Zijn zoon zal hem niet opvolgen omdat deze andere carièreplannen heeft. De herenkapper is oorspronkelijk opgericht in 1881 door de familie Lejeune en in deze dagen hebben zij de koning wellicht eens gekapt als deze in Tilburg was.

Dus gisteren toog ik met mijn terugtrekkende haargrens, Converse Allstars sneakers, geruit overhemd, Soho-tas en PME jeans voor de allereerste keer naar deze kapper om daar een klassieke haarsnijbeurt te ervaren en voor een fotosessie. Werkelijk alles is vintage in deze kapperszaak: geen fake maar echte vintage...misschien heeft mijn opa hier ook zijn haren ooit laten knippen.

Ik had mijn statief en camera bij me. Ik installeerde de camera op het statief en plaatste deze op een strategische plek helemaal achter in de salon. Ik vertelde de kapper dat ik geen flits gebruik zodat we ons niet moeten bewegen op het moment dat de foto wordt gemaakt. Ik drukte op de knop om de zelfontspanner in werking te zetten. Ik rende en sprong in de kapstoel en vroeg de kapper om in de perfecte positie te gaan staan terwijl ik mijn gezicht in de "en profile" stand richtte om zodoende de aanwezigheid van een spiegel te benadrukken. Klik... de foto was genomen en ik vertelde de kapper dat ik er een schilderij van ga maken. Ik ga de kapper mijn werk tonen als ik eind december weer voor zo'n prima kapbeurt ga.

Today the Dutch airline Martinair operated its very last passenger flight. Due to restructuring the company continues after 53 year now, solely as a air freighter company under the wings of KLM. To honour the airline I painted a nostalgic air stair scenery of the Martinair of the past.

Vandaag was het Martinair allerlaatste passagiersvlucht. Door een herstructurering gaat het bedrijf na 53 jaar alleen door als luchtvrachtvervoerder onder de vleugels van KLM. Ter herinnering maakte ik vandaag een nostalgisch vliegtuigtrapscène van het Martinair van weleer.

Last Friday I went to Leuven in Belgium and came along this eat cafe (brasserie) in the city centre. Leuven is one of Belgium's most renown universtiy cities and is the birth place of the Stella Artois Breweries. Underway I made a stop in the King Leopold Ave in Westerlo.

Afegelopen vrijdag ging ik naar Leuven en kwam langs deze brasserie in het stadscentrum. Leuven is een van de meest toonaangevende univertiteitssteden van België en is de geboorteplaats van de Stella Artois brouwerijen. Onderweg maakte ik nog een stop in the Koning Leopoldlaan in Westerloo.

Monday I stayed at Hotel New York in Rotterdam for a lunch. Hotel New York is the former head quarter of the Holland America Line. The beautiful Autumn light shined over the Maas river and coloured the hotel interior in amber tones.

Maandag verbleef ik in Hotel New York in Rotterdam voor een lunch. Hotel New York is het voormalige hoofdkantoor van de Holland America Line. Het mooie herfstlicht scheen over de Maas en kleurde het hotelinterieur in ambertonen.

After my work, when I return homewards on my bike I come along this pond. It's situated along the Wolterbeekstraat in Tilburg. Today it was an exceptional day, wheather wise. Rain and hail showers with lightning mixed with bright sunny spells made the sky turbulent looking with magnificent towering clouds cathing the Autumn sunlight.

Na mijn werk, als ik op mijn fiets huiswaarts ga, kom ik langs deze vijver. deze is gelegen aan de Wolterbeekstraat in Tilburg. Vandaag was het een uitzonderlijke dag qua weer. Regen en hagelbuien met bliksem afgewisseld met zonnig momenten toonden een turbulent zwerk met magnifieke opbollende wolken die het herfstlicht weerkaatsten.

Four speed paintings of Dutch beaches during Autumn. With the permission of two great Dutch photographers I was able to translate their original photo pictures into true impressionistic art pieces. The upper 3 show the beach at Zandvoort (original photo of Gerard Boukes) and the 4th one is the specious beach at Noordwijk, originally photographed by Philip Verhagen.

Drie snelschilderingen van Nederlandse stranden tijdens de herfst. Met toestemming van twee grootse Nederlandse fotografen is het mij gelukt om hun foto's te vertalen naar echte impressionistische kunstwerken. De drie bovenste schilderijen tonen het strand van Zandvoort (naar originele foto van Gerard Boukes) en het vierde schilderij is het ruime strand bij Noordwijk, naar een foto van Philip Verhagen.

Villa Dongewyk

Villa Dongewyk is a former house which had toll rights and is built along the river Donge, somewhere back in the 15th century. The toll house 3 itself was situated across the Bredaseweg, at the opposite of the villa. The villa became an inn later where the Dutch royals stopped by to refresh themselves before entering the House of Orange garrisson city of Tilburg, few miles farther east wards. During the 1970 Dongewyk was a cafe but since many years it has become a private house.

Villa Dongewyk is een vormalig huis dat tolrechten had en is in de 15e eeuw gebouwd langs de river de Donge. Het tolhuis 3 zelf lag tegenover de villa, aan de overkant van de Bredaseweg. Later werd de villa een herberg waar de Koninklijke familie aanlegden om zicht te verfrissen alvorens de ganizoenstad Tilburg binnen te rijden. Tijdens de 1970er jaren was Dongewyk een cafe maar is sinds jaren weer een woonhuis geworden.

Ecole du Louvre in Paris. This could have been a plein air painting. Painted in just 15 minutes, inspired from a Google Street View screen shot. My rapid and rough way of painting makes it very impressionistic. Below is the same scene but more time is spend on it.

School van Louvre in Parijs. Dit kon wel eens een plein air schilderij zijn geweest. In slechts vijftien minuten geschilderd, geïnspireerd door een Googl Street View screen drop. Mijn snelle en ruwe manier van schilderen maakt dit werk erg impressionistisch. De onderste toont hetzelfde tafereel maar hier is meer tijd aan gespendeerd.

Slavante Country Estate

Buitengoed Slavante (Country Estate Slavante), in early days named as Casino Slavante was build in 1846 as a country club on top of the Sint Pietersberg (Saint Pieter Mountain). On this spot a monastry was situated in early days. The monks were Franciscans or Observanten. Nowadays this Estate Slavante is a dinner-café, party and meeting centre. I painted this work on a sunny Autumn 2011 afternoon where at that moment the Maastricht locals sat down for a light refreshments and supper. The terrace offers a great panorama view upon the Maas-valley. This is also the starting point for guided tours through the Maastricht "caves", chalk stone mines in the Zonneberg.

Buitengoed Slavante, vroeger Casino Slavante genaamd was oorspronkelijk in 1846 gebouwd als een buiten sociëteit op de top van de Sint Pietersberg. In vroegere tijden stond er op deze plek een klooster van Franciscanen-paters ook wel Observanten genoemd. Tegenwoordig is Buitengoed Slavante een eetcafé, party and vergadercentrum. I schilderde dit werk op een zonnige herfstmiddag in 2011 waar op dat moment de Maastrichtenaren genoten van hun consumpties en etentje. Het terras biedt een prachtig panorama-uitzicht op de Maasvallei. Dit is tevens het startpunt voor rondleidingen door de Maastrichtse kalksteengroeves ("grotten") in de Zonneberg.

In the front you see the Province House and the MECC (Maastricht Exposition & Congres Centre) along the Maas (Meuse), the river which springs at the French Plateau de Langres and mouths in the North Sea in Rotterdam.

Zicht op de Maastricht' rechter oever vanaf Sint Pieter, genaamd Wyck en Randwyck. Geheel links ziet u de Colonel-gebouw. Op de voorgrond, langs de Maas ziet u het Provinciehuis en het MECC (Maastricht Exposition & Congres Centre). On a lazy sunny and warm Autumn Sunday I went to the Maastricht to paint the Apostelhoeve (Apostel Estate), Netherland's largest and oldest wine estate with vinyard, situated on the slopes of the Jeker Valley into the Kanne direction. At the same time I made a self portret on that beautiful day. I had to protect my bolding head against the sun and so I put on my quilted hat, manufactured by my love.

Op een luie zonnige en warme Herfstzondag ging ik naar Maastricht om er de Apostelhoeve te schilderen, Nederland's grootste en oudste wijngoed met wijngaard, gelegen op de hellingen van het Jekerdal richting Kanne. Ik maakte tevens een zelfportret op deze prachtige dag. Ik moest mijn kalende hoofd tegen de zon beschermen en dus deed ik mijn quilthoedje op die mijn lief voor mij heeft gemaakt.

Hoeve Zonneberg or Farm Estate Zonneberg is a socalled "quadrant farm". It was build in 1875 on the Zonneberg (Sun Mountain) slopes by Emanuel Duchateau who rented Farm Estate Lichtenberg in earlier times, situated higher on top.

Hoeve Zonneberg is een carré boerderij. Het is gebouwd in 1875 op hellingen van de Zonneberg door Emanuel Duchateau die eerder het verderop op de top gelegen Hoeve Lichtenberg had gepacht.

While the corn is still on the slopes of the Zonneberg, the early morning Autumn light colours the landscape in amber tones. In the middle the Sint Pieter Uphill is situated, seen from the North-North-Western direction.

Terwijl het maïs nog op de zuidhellingen van de Zonneberg staat, toont het landschap amberkleurig op een vroege herfstochtend. In het midden staat de kerk Sint Pieter Boven (of 'op de berg'), gezien vanuit noord- noord-westelijke richting.

Late Summer light shines on the suburb village Sint Pieter with Maastricht in the background, seen from the South. In the foreground you see the church Sint Pieter Uphill. Right behind that church in the middle of the trees there is the "De Torentjes" villa where the famous violist and orchestra leader André Rieu resides. At the far left Maastricht's Sint Serveraas cathedral and Sint Jan bell tower are clearly visable. At the right you see the river Meuse (Maas).

Laatzomerlicht schijnt op het Maastrichtse kerkdorp Sint Pieter met Maastricht op de achtergrond, gezien vanuit het zuiden. Op de voorgrond ziet u de Sint Pieterskerk Boven. Direct rechts, achter de kerk verscholen onder de bomen bevindt zich villa "De Torentjes" waar de beroemde violist en orkestleider André Rieu woont. Thorn, situated in mid Dutch Limburg (close to the Belgian border) is called the little white town because all houses in the pitoresk village centre are painted white. Today I went there and made some stunning pleinair paintings. This is number 1 which I named "Late Summer in Thorn".

Thorn, gesitueerd in midden Nederlands Limburg (dichtbij de Belgische grens) wordt ook wel het kleine witte stadje genoemd omdat bijna alle huizen in het pitoreske centrum wit zijn geschilderd. Vandaag ging ik er heen om een paar mooie openlucht schilderijen te maken. Dit is nummer 1 welke ik "Late zomer in Thorn" heb genoemd.

Céramique is the name of Maastricht's east bank newest and most fanciest residential-commercial-cultural district, part of Wyck. In the middle you see the remarkable Bonnefanten Museum (www.bonnefantenmuseum.nl), at the left side the Colonel office building and at the right the Holy Heart of Jesus Church or Dome Church with the copper roof. The area is named after the Société Céramique, a former pottery factory (1863-1958). Painted after a photo made by Huub Machiels.

Céramique is naam van Maastricht's oostoever jongste en meest hippe woon-kantoor-cultuurwijk, deel van Wyck. In het midden ziet u het herkenbare Bonnefanten Museum (www.bonnefantenmuseum.nl), aan de linkerzijde staat de Colonel, een mooi vormgegeven kantoorgebouw, en aan de rechterkant ziet u de Heilig Hart van Jezuskerk of Koepelkerk met z'n koperen dak. Het gebied is genoemd naar de fabriek Société Céramique, een voormalige aardewerkfabriek (1863-1958). Geschilderd naar een foto van Huub Machiels.
